round lake preserve
With a long term partnership envisioned, Saratoga PLAN and the Town of Malta acquired the land that now makes up the Round Lake Preserve from the Sweeney family in 2008. They have worked together to preserve this land adjacent to Round Lake and Anthony Kill, protecting significant natural and archeological resources. The resultant Round Lake Preserve provides multiple passive recreational and cultural opportunities to the community including, but not limited to, improved site access, a formalized parking area, accessible trails, boardwalk, fishing access and viewing areas; educational opportunities, and a car-top boat launch.
This key environmental area contains a significant amount of scenic wetlands, woodland, meadows and fields and is an ideal place for nature walks, birding, wildlife observation, canoeing/kayaking, fishing, cross country skiing and snowshoeing.
This preserve is open to the public for nature study, walking, fishing, canoeing/kayaking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing. Please carry out all your trash and leave only footprints. Dogs must be leashed and under control at all times; please clean up after your pet.
The following activities are NOT permitted on the preserve:
- Cutting, digging, removing, or damaging any tree, shrub, flower, or plant;
- Hunting, trapping, removing, harassing, touching or feeding wildlife;
- Use of firearms, paint ball devices, or artificial light;
- Motorized vehicles, snowmobiles, ATVs, etc.;
- Alcohol or illegal substances; and
- Camping or igniting fires.
Please follow the rules so that this resource can continue to be accessible to the community.
From Saratoga Springs, head south on 1-87 S. Take exit 11 towards Round Lake and proceed through traffic circle following the Round Lake bypass and signs for NY-67 E. After approximately 1.7 miles turn right at the sign marked “Round Lake Preserve”. The preserve contains two parking areas – one for unloading and handicap parking near the wetlands, and a second lot at the beginning of the trail for longer-stay parking.
